The potential of stable carbon isotope ratios and leaf temperature as proxies for drought stress in banana under field conditions

Drought stress is a major limiting factor for banana production and the incidence of drought spells expected to increase with climate change. Climate smart practices varieties are needed, but evaluation in field hampered by lack reliable physiological indicators. We investigated potential using stable carbon isotope ratios (?13C) leaf temperature its derived DANS (Degrees above Non-Stressed Canopy) index as proxies banana. Leaf samples were taken ?13C analysis was monitored throughout day trial different plant stages (mother daughter plants) under two irrigation treatments (rainfed irrigated) during dry season Arusha, Tanzania. found that ?13C, highly sensitive Soil volumetric water content had significant effect on both values DANS. There difference (1.5 ± 0.1‰, p < 0.01) afternoon (7 1 °C, between rainfed irrigated treatment. To deal variability within leaf, we developed tailored sampling method. This study also revealed complexity dynamics intertwined system mother plants. Daughter plants more negative (?1.9 lower temperatures (4 °C) than indicates less stress, interpretation ratio complicated flux from plant. Once have full understanding these complexities plant, based methods developed, can be directly implemented various conditions.
